An example of this would be if one is allergic to walnuts or shellfish, then to avoid eating walnuts or shellfish.
Although avoiding the allergen is the optimal method for treating allergies, there are circumstances where the allergic person is not able to avoid the allergen. One example of this is when there is pollen present in the air outside.
To treat these situations, there are drugs available that block the allergic reacttions. These drugs are antihistamines, hydrocortisones, epinepherine (also known as adreniline), cortisone, dexamethasone, theophylline, and cromolyn sodium.
All drugs are required to pass the FDA approval before they are allowed for treatment of allergies. Some of the drugs are over the counter, while some of the stronger medications are available through prescription only.
As with many ailments, there are the unproven treatments that people believe work well. These usually come in the form of herbal medicines or traditional Chinese medicine. No substantial scientific proof exists to whether these treatments actually help or alleviate allergic reactions.
